Why Location Matters for Freelancers Working In These States
Some states are not like the others.
A customer spotlight conversation with Durga Arjun, VP of Provider Operations at Blossom Health, on consolidating a fast-scaling 1099 psychiatry telehealth platform and delivering W-2-grade benefits to a growing provider network.
Blossom Health is a 1099 psychiatry telehealth platform. It runs in 14 states with over 200 contracted providers, and more are coming imminently. As the network grew, the patchwork of onboarding and payments tools running it started to slow the team down. In April 2026, Blossom signed with Wingspan. Three weeks later, every existing provider had migrated and the first Wingspan payroll had run. Carmen Wong, Blossom's Technical Account Manager at Wingspan, sat down with Durga for a customer spotlight Q&A to highlight why they decided to partner with Wingspan and how the experience has been thus far.124199983
"At Blossom, our entire philosophy is that bringing high quality providers means that those providers have to feel as though they are being genuinely taken care of," Durga said. "We wanted to give them the kind of scaffolding and support that you would expect from a W-2 position while still letting them keep the flexibility and the autonomy that drew them to the whole 1099 structure in the first place." That balance is what pushed her team to look beyond their incumbent solutions for managing their 1099 providers.
Before Wingspan, Blossom Health ran provider onboarding and payments across multiple platforms. Stripe handled payments. PandaDoc handled initial contract signatures. Other tools filled the gaps. As Blossom scaled, the fragmented setup showed its costs on both sides of the network. "It was becoming tougher and tougher to keep track of who had completed which part of the onboarding requirements and what still remained outstanding," Durga said. "We were spending a lot of time just chasing down statuses." Blossom's contractors were feeling the same friction.
When Wingspan demoed the platform, three things landed for Durga's team.
Blossom Health signed with Wingspan on April 30, 2026. By June 1, the team had migrated all of its existing contractors and run its first payroll on the platform. "We were able to get all of our existing contractors onboarded onto Wingspan and receive payments within around three weeks, which I think is a fantastic timeline for such a large migration," Durga said. "Everyone net-new is already being onboarded onto Wingspan, so that part is very easy to take care of." Since then, Blossom has run 13 payment cycles through Wingspan, moving over $1M to the doctors and clinicians in their network.
The most impactful change is what providers see. Under Stripe, tracking a payment was hard. On Wingspan, providers have full visibility into exactly where each payment sits at any moment. "On their end, they're able to track the statuses of their payments really easily," Durga said. "It's taken a lot of the guesswork and the anxiety out of just the process of getting paid." Providers have also started bringing up benefits unprompted during Durga's regular check-ins, expressing interest in the lifestyle benefits and the tax withholding options. "The biggest unlock for us is just the visibility throughout all of this, both on their end and on ours, specifically when it comes to payments," Durga said. "You don't want to mess with people's money, and Stripe didn’t provide much visibility into where their payment was in the process."
When it comes to change management, Carmen asked Durga what she'd tell peers who are hesitant to make a similar move. "If your priority is consolidation and experience both internally and externally, it's just kind of a bullet that you're going to have to bite," Durga said. "And good account management makes a huge difference." She singled out her Wingspan account team as a big reason the migration went smoothly. "Navigating a big migration like this is always going to have its pitfalls. It's always going to be a little bit difficult no matter how prepared you are," she said. "You're always going to have somebody that you can ask directly about any questions you have. There should be no hesitations with going forward with Wingspan."
To wrap up the Q+A, Carmen asked Durga to provide one piece of candid feedback, as one of Wingspan's cultural principles is "Being direct is being kind." Durga shared that, as Blossom Health continues to grow and onboard more providers, she wants to have more visibility into financial & lifestyle benefit adoption. "I want to see who is using all of the wonderful benefits that Wingspan has to offer," Durga said. "That's going to be really instrumental in the next round of QBRs I'm doing."
Thank you, Durga, for your candor and for taking the time to share your story with us. We're looking forward to continuing to build alongside you and the Blossom Health team.
