How DeliverThat Invested in Purpose-Built Payments Infrastructure
A Growth Partner that Automates and Scales Onboarding and Payments
“Our contractors are the heart of DeliverThat. Our motto is by drivers, for drivers. Without them, we don’t have a product, and anything we can do to improve their experience benefits them, but it also benefits our restaurant partners, and their customers, too. It’s a win-win-win across the board with Wingspan.”
Before Wingspan:
- Scaling faster than any off-the-shelf solution could handle
- Building and managing a complex payment infrastructure
- Challenges keeping pace with high-velocity growth and demand
After Wingspan:
- Fully automated payout process makes payroll easy and eliminates manual work
- A compliant and trusted infrastructure for all driver data
- An intentional partnership with a platform that will scale in lock-step with DeliverThat’s growth
Overview
DeliverThat helps restaurants manage first-party catering delivery by connecting restaurants and drivers on a digital platform. While scaling rapidly, Matthew Pavkov, Director of Product, needed to solve an incredibly complex problem: How to pay thousands of drivers quickly, accurately, and transparently. In partnership with DeliverThat’s CTO and CEO, he searched for a partner that prioritized the contractor relationship, and found Wingspan, a “purpose-built platform for contractors.”
Challenge
DeliverThat is quickly expanding its service across the US and attracting thousands of drivers. This high velocity growth meant the company was scaling faster than any off-the-shelf payments solution could handle. To support the increasing driver demand and resulting payments volume, DeliverThat’s accounting team had to manage multiple weekly workflows to ensure their drivers were paid accurately and on-time.
The rapid growth also created another challenge: How to capture required onboarding documentation in a secure and scalable way. “Compliance is very important to us. It’s our responsibility to protect our drivers,” says Matt. “Collecting all of the IRS requirements and verifying the licenses creates a complex driver onboarding process.” DeliverThat’s team balanced multiple, and at times manual, workflows to collect and store documents and requirements in a scalable manner.
Solution
The DeliverThat team found plenty of vendor options for managing payments—but only Wingspan could be the partner they needed to expand. “As we thought more deeply about the contractor experience, we realized we wanted so much more than a payments vendor. It’s about finding a partner that shares our values and can help us grow our own platform as we manage drivers and fleets.”
First, Wingspan fully automated payment processing for all of DeliverThat’s drivers nationwide. “Wingspan streamlines the collection and storing of onboarding information and it’s directly integrated into our driver app so that drivers can manage their address, bank account information, and their invoices all in one place,” says Matt.
Second, Wingspan gives drivers more transparency and more choice around how they want to be paid. Drivers can choose Instant Payouts and use Wingspan Wallet.
Darien Terrell, CEO of DeliverThat, added, “Why did we choose Wingspan? Because they weren’t just going to power payments. They had infrastructure we plan on using long-term. They removed a significant operational management burden for paying drivers, and that’s just the beginning.”
Impact
DeliverThat is now processing thousands of payments per month through Wingspan and saving up to 80 hours a month. With Wingspan, DeliverThat has a payments infrastructure that can keep pace with their growth velocity and complexity.
“We’re saving at least ten hours a week on payments, plus another ten hours managing support tickets,” says Matt. “It all happens automatically.”
The self-service nature of Wingspan’s platform has also streamlined information updates for drivers. “Beyond the payment piece, allowing drivers to keep addresses or banking information updated is such a time-saver,” he says.
More than anything, for Matt and his team, it was about selecting a technology partner that could help them build relationships with their drivers to give them the best possible experience. Says Matt, “Whichever vendor we chose was going to interact directly with the driver, and one of the reasons we chose Wingspan was that they care about that relationship.” DeliverThat started with a small launch cohort, ramped the drivers on the platform by 525x in just two months. 80% of these drivers are already repeat payees - signaling strong retention and satisfaction with the new payment workflow.
Final Thoughts
Looking forward, the DeilverThat team is excited to use Wingspan for delivering and filing 1099-NEC forms this year. “It’s going to be completely automated by Wingspan, and we love that,” says Matt. “Manually creating the form, tracking down drivers to confirm their information, …That’s a huge time savings, at least 100 hours. Between this and our automated payments, our team can shift from operations to continued investments in our strategic growth.” Making an intentional choice about how to manage driver payments, and selecting Wingspan means alignment towards future growth and success.
