5 best Wise alternatives for contractor payments in 2026
The best Wise alternatives for contractor payments are Wingspan for platforms where 1099 contractors, international contractors or contingent W-2 workers are critical to your business and where you have 100+ workers, Payoneer for marketplace receiving accounts, Airwallex for multi-currency accounts and API payouts, Deel for employer of record hiring, and Tipalti for global supplier AP. Wise Business costs $31 USD one time plus transfers from 0.57 percent, and its published Wise Business documentation lists no W-9 collection and no 1099 filing for the paying business.
Wise is a payment rail. A contractor payment platform adds the workforce layer around it: onboarding, tax documents, worker records, and year-end filing. We built Wingspan for that second job and for flexible workforces where people start and stop through the year.
Why teams look for a Wise alternative
Wise Business assigns W-9 collection and 1099 filing to the paying business, and Wise says so in its own guide to paying 1099 contractors. That guide tells businesses the contractor "should complete a W-9 form" and that "you must submit the 1099 to the IRS by January 31" (5). Wise's published payouts page lists no tax form collection and no 1099 filing either (4).
Late or incorrect 1099 filing carries a penalty on every return. The IRS charges $60 per information return corrected within 30 days, $130 through August 1, and $340 after August 1 or not filed at all, for returns required to be filed in 2026 (14). A company paying 500 contractors that files past August 1 is exposed to $170,000 on the returns alone, and the IRS assesses a separate penalty on each payee statement.
Missing or incorrect taxpayer ID numbers trigger backup withholding at 24 percent (15). Wise's own guide places collection of the contractor's tax status with the paying business (5), so a team paying contractors through a transfer rail ends up tracking it in a second system, usually alongside the batch upload file.
With Wise BatchTransfer, recipients are paid without opening a Wise account (3). That keeps payouts simple, and it leaves the payer with no worker record of its own. Contractors have no account with the payer to log in to, so banking updates and tax form requests land in your finance team's inbox instead of a portal you control.
Where Wise is genuinely strong
Price is one of Wise's clearest strengths. Wise Business starts transfers at 0.57 percent and converts at the mid-market rate with no exchange rate markup. A one-time $31 USD setup fee unlocks account details in 22 currencies (1). Among the six platforms on this page, that is one of the lowest published FX markups. The closest published comparison is Airwallex at 0.5 percent above interbank on major currencies (10).
Wise publishes a concrete speed figure, too. Wise Business states that 96 percent of payments complete within 24 hours (2). With BatchTransfer, a team can send up to 1,000 international payments from one spreadsheet upload and hold balances in over 40 currencies (3). Wise also connects to QuickBooks and Xero (7) and publishes a payouts API (4).
Wise Business is the right answer for a finance team that needs a low-cost cross-border payment rail and nothing else, when you are not looking for a system to collect W-9s and file 1099s because you already own onboarding and tax filing somewhere else, or when your roster is small and mostly made up of overseas contractors with no US 1099-NEC filing obligation. Outside those two cases, the payer still owns W-9 collection, TIN checks, 1099 filing, and the worker records an auditor will ask for.
Wise pricing in 2026
Wise Business publishes a full fee schedule instead of gating it behind a sales call. Wise charges a one-time $31 USD fee for account details in 22 currencies, then prices sending and currency conversion from 0.57 percent of the amount moved. Holding money is free, and receiving a USD wire or SWIFT payment costs a fixed $6.11 USD per payment. Above $25,000 USD or equivalent in spend, Wise applies a volume discount (1).
Treat the 0.57 percent as a floor, not a blended rate. Wise varies it by currency and corridor and says so on the same page. Wise publishes no per-seat and no per-contractor subscription fee, so a Wise bill tracks payment volume rather than headcount (1).
| Wise Business charge | Published price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Wise Business account details | $31 USD, one time | Receiving account details in 22 currencies (1) |
| Wise Business sending money | From 0.57 percent of the amount sent | Rate varies by currency and corridor (1) |
| Wise Business currency conversion | From 0.57 percent of the amount converted | Mid-market rate with no exchange rate markup (1) |
| Wise Business holding money | Free | Balances held in over 40 currencies (1) |
| Wise Business receiving a USD wire or SWIFT payment | $6.11 USD fixed fee per payment | Inbound USD wire and SWIFT receipts (1) |
| Wise Business volume discount | Applied above $25,000 USD or equivalent in spend | Discount amount is not published (1) |

| Airwallex | Best for finance teams needing multi-currency accounts and API payouts | $0 USD per user per month (Explore), $12 USD per user per month plus a platform fee that scales with team size (Grow) (10) | Free local transfers to 120+ countries and 0.5 percent above interbank on major currencies (10) | Airwallex's published product and pricing pages list no contractor tax document collection and no 1099 filing (10). | Tipalti | Best for finance teams automating global supplier AP | $99 USD per month (Accounts Payable), $249 USD per month (Mass Payments) (13) | W-9 and W-8 collection with tax ID validation across 62 countries against 3,000+ rules (13) | Tipalti's portal and onboarding are built around suppliers and payees rather than a worker relationship (13). Trustpilot rates Tipalti 2.8 out of 5 from 101 reviews, against Wingspan's 4.3 (24) |
Table: Wise pricing and capabilities compared with five alternatives.
The 5 best Wise alternatives for contractor payments
1. Wingspan: contractor onboarding, payments, and 1099 filing
Best for platforms where 1099 contractors, international contractors or contingent W-2 workers are critical to your business and where you have 100+ workers. This is for operations and finance teams that pay 100 to 50,000 workers and need onboarding, tax filing, flexible W-2 payroll, and payments to share one audit trail.
We put the full worker lifecycle around the transfer. Contractors onboard themselves through a portal, submit a W-9, and get paid by ACH, wire, or card. We can onboard and pay contractors in 200+ countries and territories in hundreds of local currencies (16).
During onboarding, we verify TINs against IRS records and prompt the contractor to correct a failed match before the first payment goes out (17). The check happens before payment, not at year-end. We then file and deliver 1099-NEC forms and any 1099-MISC box from the same worker record. If a contractor's tax information changes mid-year or a form needs fixing after it's filed, both run through the app rather than a manual amendment (25 and 26).
Wingspan also manages seasonal, temporary, and part-time W-2 payroll, including state payroll registration, tax filing, and other state payroll workflows. Wingspan MCP gives authorized AI agents access to the same workforce management platform, so teams can work from one worker record instead of reconciling a payment rail with separate payroll and tax systems.
Contractors can also access optional health coverage and financial tools through Wingspan. That gives the worker a reason to keep using the platform after a transfer lands and can support retention (21). These are products and resources for eligible independent contractors, not employer-sponsored W-2 benefits. They do not determine worker classification and do not replace any benefits required for employees.
Our list price is $10 per active payee per month, with lower effective rates at scale. Billing follows payments, so a contractor who isn't paid in a given month isn't billed (20). We don't publish our FX markup. You'll need to ask us for that number.
We aren't for every company. Our pricing and product are built for companies with roughly 50 or more workers, so smaller teams are better served by QuickBooks or Gusto. We're also not a PEO or an employer of record. Companies that need legal employment abroad should look at Deel. Our filing service covers the 50 US states and Washington DC, while US territory filings and non-US mailings are handled outside the platform (19).
2. Payoneer: global payouts and marketplace tax filing
Best for marketplaces that need local receiving accounts. Payoneer fits platforms and agencies paying independent workers where local bank rails are slow or expensive.
Recipients can use local receiving accounts or a Payoneer balance, then hold funds, spend on a card, or withdraw locally (8). For mass payouts, Payoneer supports both an API and file uploads. It also publishes a full fee table covering receiving, conversion, and withdrawal.
The headline account fee is $29.95 USD per year, and it applies only when an account receives under $6,000 USD equivalent in any 12 consecutive months. Receiving into a local currency account is free. Non-local currency receiving costs 1 percent with a $1.00 USD minimum, while withdrawals to a bank account run 1.2 percent to 4 percent (8).
Tax handling sits under Payoneer's marketplace line. Its published product page states that "If you're US based, we can manage your 1099 forms through to filing with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)" and covers W-9, W-8, 1042, and 1099 series forms (9). The product is built for platforms paying large recipient pools. A finance team managing its own contractor roster should confirm that its payer entity is covered.
3. Airwallex: multi-currency accounts with API payouts
Best for finance teams needing multi-currency accounts and API payouts. Airwallex fits teams that want business accounts, cards, and programmatic payouts under one login.
If your team likes Wise for FX but wants more money operations in one place, Airwallex is the closest substitute on this list. It combines multi-currency accounts, corporate cards, spend controls, and a payouts API.
Its published FX markup is 0.5 percent above interbank rates for major currencies and 1 percent for the rest. Local transfers are free to 120+ countries, and SWIFT transfers cost $15 to $25 USD each (10). Wise's published equivalent starts at 0.57 percent of the amount sent (1).
Explore is listed at $0 USD per user per month. Grow costs $12 USD per user per month plus a platform fee that scales with team size, and Accelerate has custom pricing (10). Airwallex does not publish the platform fee as a figure, so get a quote before comparing it with Wise's per-transfer pricing.
The published capabilities focus on treasury and money movement. They do not include contractor tax document collection or 1099 filing (10). A US contractor operation will need a second system for tax season and a way to reconcile both systems against one worker list.
4. Deel: contractors and employees in other countries
Best for companies that need employer of record hiring. The fit is strongest when you need a legal employment entity in another country or contractor agreements localized for each jurisdiction.
Deel solves a different problem from a transfer rail. It covers contractor management, employer of record hiring, and payroll across many countries. That employment coverage matters when someone needs to be employed lawfully in the country where they live.
That breadth comes with per-worker pricing. Deel lists Hire contractors at $49 USD per contractor per month, contractor of record at $325 USD per contractor per month, employer of record at $599 USD per employee per month covering legal employment in 130+ countries, and US PEO at $125 USD per employee per month (11).
For US contractor tax work, Deel collects a W-9 during contract signing. US entities can also file 1099-NEC forms to the IRS from the platform, including the contractor copy (12). That covers more of the tax workflow than the payment rails on this page.
The price adds up fast for a US operation paying several hundred or several thousand 1099 workers. At 500 contractors on the $49 USD Hire contractors plan, Deel's published list price reaches $24,500 USD per month (11). The same 500 workers on Wingspan is $5,000 a month at $10 per active payee list price, and lower at scale.
5. Tipalti: supplier AP and mass payments automation
Best for finance teams automating global supplier AP. This is built for controllers and AP managers processing high volumes of supplier invoices and payouts across multiple entities.
Tipalti comes from the accounts payable side of the market. It handles invoice capture, approval routing, payment execution, and reconciliation, then integrates that work with the ERP. The company packages those capabilities as Accounts Payable and Mass Payments (13).
Tax forms sit inside that AP workflow. Tipalti collects W-9 and W-8 tax forms from payees and validates tax IDs across 62 countries against 3,000+ rules (13). Its branded supplier and payee portal also supports self-service onboarding in 27 languages (13).
Pricing starts at $99 USD per month for Accounts Payable and $249 USD per month for Mass Payments, with transaction fees on top of the monthly plan price. Both tiers include unlimited users and a payee portal (13).
Tipalti describes the people receiving money as suppliers and payees (13). That distinction matters when the people being paid are individuals running their own small businesses rather than vendor entities with their own AP contacts.
Wingspan compared with Wise, capability by capability
Wingspan and Wise both move money to contractors. Wingspan also handles the work before and after the transfer: onboarding, tax verification, 1099 filing, flexible W-2 payroll, and the worker experience.

Table: Wingspan and Wise Business capabilities compared.
Wingspan's contractor health and financial products are optional for eligible independent contractors. They are not employer-sponsored W-2 benefits, do not determine worker classification, and do not replace benefits required for employees.
What to look for in a contractor payment platform
Six questions separate a payment rail from a workforce platform. Every vendor on this page can be scored on all six.
- Does the platform collect W-9 or W-8 forms and store them against a worker record you can audit later?
- Does it verify taxpayer ID numbers against IRS records before the first payment, or only after a filing is rejected?
- Does it file and deliver 1099-NEC forms, or does it hand you a file and expect you to file elsewhere?
- Can a worker log in to update banking details, see payment history, and download tax forms without emailing your team?
- How is the platform priced: per worker on the roster, per worker paid, per transaction, or a flat platform fee?
- What is the published FX markup, and is list pricing published at all? Wise and Airwallex publish both. Wingspan publishes $10 per active payee per month, lower at scale, but not its FX markup.
Currency coverage and FX cost are worth scoring separately from the compliance questions, because the two decisions usually sit with different owners and different budgets.
Wise alternatives: frequently asked questions
What are the best alternatives to Wise?
The most common Wise alternatives for contractor payments are Wingspan for platforms where 1099 contractors, international contractors or contingent W-2 workers are critical to your business and where you have 100+ workers, Payoneer for marketplace receiving accounts, Airwallex for multi-currency business accounts with API payouts, Deel for employer of record hiring, and Tipalti for global supplier AP. Wise remains strongest for low-cost cross-border transfers.
How much does Wise Business cost?
Wise Business charges a one-time $31 USD setup fee that unlocks account details in 22 currencies, then prices transfers and currency conversion from 0.57 percent of the amount sent (1). Holding funds is free. Receiving a USD wire costs $6.11 USD per payment. Volume discounts start above $25,000 USD equivalent.
Is Wise good for paying 1099 contractors?
Wise is good at the payment step. Wise's own guide to paying 1099 contractors instructs businesses to collect the W-9 themselves and to submit the 1099 to the IRS by January 31, and points readers to accounting software for automated filing. For a handful of overseas contractors with no US filing obligation, Wise is enough.
Does Wise file 1099 forms for businesses?
Wise does not list 1099 filing for paying businesses in its Wise Business documentation. Its contractor payment guide tells businesses to collect a W-9, submit 1099s to the IRS, and use accounting software for automated filing (5). Wise does issue tax forms relating to its own account holders.
How many payments can Wise send at once?
Wise BatchTransfer sends up to 1,000 international payments from one spreadsheet upload (3). The batch tool requires no integration work. Recipients are paid into their own bank accounts in their home currency and do not need to open a Wise account to receive the money.
Is money held in a Wise account FDIC insured?
Wise states that it is a Money Services Business, not a bank. Customers who opt into the Wise interest feature get pass-through FDIC insurance up to $250,000 USD through Wise's program bank (6). Balances outside that feature do not receive pass-through FDIC insurance.
What does it cost to file 1099s late?
The IRS charges $60 per information return corrected within 30 days of the deadline, $130 if filed by August 1, and $340 if filed after August 1 or not filed at all, for returns required to be filed in 2026. Intentional disregard costs $680 per return with no annual maximum (14).
Move contractor payments and 1099 filing onto one platform
We collect W-9s, verify TINs against IRS records, pay contractors in 200+ countries and territories in hundreds of local currencies, and file 1099-NEC and any 1099-MISC box from the same worker record. If you're paying 100 or more contractors and still reconciling batch transfers against a spreadsheet, we can show you the full workflow in 30 minutes.
