Wingspan vs. WorkMarket by ADP

WorkMarket by ADP review: pricing, features, and alternatives

WorkMarket by ADP is ADP's contractor management system for US companies that onboard, dispatch, and pay 1099 workers. WorkMarket does not publish pricing. WorkMarket fits field-service and dispatch-heavy operations best. Teams comparing it usually look at Field Nation for field-service marketplaces, Openforce for contractor compliance and settlement, Worksuite for global freelancer management, Deel for cross-border hiring, and Wingspan for contractor payments and 1099 filing.

What is WorkMarket by ADP?

WorkMarket by ADP is the contractor management product ADP sells at workmarket.com. WorkMarket was founded in 2010 in New York City (15), and ADP announced its acquisition on January 22, 2018, describing WorkMarket as a workforce management provider for "W-2 employees, 1099 contractors, vendors and other types of workers" (14). ADP's press release did not include a price, but ADP's SEC filing for that quarter did: ADP "acquired 100% of the outstanding shares of WorkMarket, Inc. ... for approximately $125 million in cash," and the same filing states the deal "was not material to the Company's results of operations, financial condition or cash flows" (23).

ADP's public filings named WorkMarket as a recent acquisition through fiscal year 2021: it appears in ADP's fiscal year 2018 10-K describing ADP as "the first HCM provider with robust freelancer management functionality" and again in the fiscal year 2021 10-K (24; 25). WorkMarket does not appear by name in ADP's fiscal year 2022 10-K or in the three fiscal years after it (26; 27; 28; 29). That gap in ADP's own annual reporting suggests WorkMarket is no longer presented to investors as a standalone strategic priority.

WorkMarket is not ADP's payroll product. ADP files WorkMarket under Compliance Services, Contractor Management, not under Payroll or Workforce Management (11). WorkMarket draws the same line itself, describing the product as "a dedicated contractor management system that differs from traditional HCM platforms" (2). RUN Powered by ADP and ADP Workforce Now are payroll products, and ADP TotalSource is ADP's PEO. WorkMarket is none of those, and it is sold and marketed standalone on its own domain with its own sales motion.

Who WorkMarket by ADP is built for

WorkMarket is best for US companies paying 10 or more independent contractors a month. WorkMarket states the floor in its own words: "WorkMarket is designed for companies that engage 10 or more independent contractors (freelancers, 1099 workers) a month" (8). The same page carries a harder constraint: "Please note WorkMarket currently only supports businesses with a US entity."

The teams that fit, per WorkMarket's own use-case pages, are operations and workforce groups at US companies that dispatch field or on-site contractor work and need vetting, work orders, and payment in one system. WorkMarket publishes 10 use-case categories, led by IT field services, with its own dedicated marketplace (7).

WorkMarket by ADP pricing in 2026

WorkMarket does not publish pricing. Every pricing call to action on the site routes to a sales form at workmarket.com/contact-sales. ADP's own marketplace listing shows one edition, "Recurring Edition", with "Login to view price" where a figure would sit (13).

Two fees are documented, in WorkMarket's Terms of Service rather than on a pricing page. The client pays a transaction fee: "Clients will pay WorkMarket a transaction fee for each Approved Assignment and Other Worker Payment ('Platform Fee')" (9). The rate is not in the agreement. It is specified inside the platform, and WorkMarket "reserves the right to change the Platform Fee at any time." The second documented fee falls on the worker rather than the client: "WorkMarket will assess a fee of two and one-half percent (2.5%) of the Assignment Value for providing the FastFunds service," the feature that gives contractors early access to funds (9).

WorkMarket by ADP features

WorkMarket organizes its product around getting work assigned and completed, and documents each area on its own page at workmarket.com. Six documented areas cover recruiting and onboarding, talent grouping, assignment management, payment, compliance, and integration, and every claim below links to the specific page it comes from.

WorkMarket's onboarding is built for volume. It documents a branded recruiting page, bulk upload of "hundreds or even thousands of workers to the WorkMarket platform to initiate onboarding", and worker self-service with "automated prompts for missing documentation" (4).

Labor Clouds are the distinctive piece. WorkMarket describes them as "pools of your pre-vetted talent, or Labor Clouds, based on requirements like skill sets, location, licenses, background checks and more", with criteria spanning bank account and tax ID, skills, licenses and certifications, NDAs and contractor agreements, background checks, drug tests, insurance, worker location, satisfaction ratings, and customizable knowledge tests. WorkMarket monitors those groups continuously: "Labor Clouds are dynamically monitored to help ensure only the contractors who meet your requirements remain in the group" (5, 4).

On tax, WorkMarket files the headline contractor form itself: "At year-end, WorkMarket prepares 1099-NEC forms and electronically files with the IRS and applicable state agencies on your behalf" (2).

WorkMarket capabilities as described on WorkMarket's own product pages, grouped by job to be done, as of August 11, 2026.

What users like about WorkMarket by ADP

WorkMarket's own customer story for Source Support is its clearest published account of the product working, checked August 11, 2026. Source Support runs "12,000+ field engineers" across "110+ countries" and reports cutting work-order-to-dispatch time from two hours to 10 minutes, "a 91% reduction in the time per dispatch" (10). Those figures belong to one customer's network, not to WorkMarket's platform.

Where WorkMarket by ADP has limits

Every limit below is scoped to what WorkMarket publishes, as of August 11, 2026, and links to the specific page that supports it. The firmest is geography: workers may be international, but the paying company may not. "Please note WorkMarket currently only supports businesses with a US entity" (8). On the worker side, WorkMarket says it can "Pay your workers in the U.S. and internationally" but publishes no country list, no currency list, and no country count (3).

Form 1099-MISC does not appear on WorkMarket's product pages. Its compliance page and its payments page both describe 1099-NEC preparation and e-filing and stop there (2, 3). That matters most for companies making medical and health care payments to contractors.

Garnishments carry an explicit carve-out in WorkMarket's own footnote. WorkMarket says it helps you "withhold non-statutory deductions like rent, fees, overpayments and insurance, as well as child support garnishments, from contractor earnings", then adds: "WorkMarket does not handle garnishment withholding calculations, remittance to agencies, or agency reporting" (2).

Three more things finance teams ask about are absent from WorkMarket's published product documentation, checked August 11, 2026. Its payments page describes paying contractors and generating invoices on the worker's behalf, with nothing about billing your end clients, and it describes no multi-level payment approvals and no payment splits (3). Speed also costs the contractor rather than the company, at 2.5% of assignment value through FastFunds (9).

WorkMarket's Trustpilot profile also carries a low score, 1.8 out of 5 from 47 reviews as of August 11, 2026, though that reviewer population is overwhelmingly contractors and field workers rather than the finance buyers this page addresses (16).

WorkMarket also operates as a marketplace, not only as private client rosters. Its IT field services use case invites clients to "search our marketplace to find the right IT professional for your next job," and describes "our network of contractors" completing work across the platform (workmarket.com/use-cases/itfs). That means the same contractors can be visible to and worked by other companies on WorkMarket, not held to one payer.

WorkMarket by ADP alternatives

Four alternatives are worth comparing against WorkMarket, listed alphabetically: Deel, Field Nation, Openforce, and Worksuite, each aimed at a different worker population than the others. Field Nation is the most common head-to-head comparison the market draws against WorkMarket. Only Deel publishes a rate card; the rest gate pricing behind a sales conversation, the same as WorkMarket itself.

Deel is best for a small number of international contractors where price matters less than coverage. It publishes a flat $49 per contractor per month for contractor management, with no published volume discount, so the same per-contractor rate applies at five contractors or five hundred: 500 contractors on that plan is $24,500 a month at list price, checked August 11, 2026 (20). Employer of record runs $599 per EOR employee per month on the same page. Deel covers a case WorkMarket does not support, since WorkMarket's own published terms limit it to US-entity businesses. It is a poor fit if your work is US field dispatch.

Field Nation is best for companies buying on-demand IT field service work. Field Nation runs a two-sided marketplace and publishes three tiers, Plus, Premier, and Enterprise, with no rates attached and volume discounts "at key incremental spend milestones", checked August 11, 2026 (17). Choose it when finding technicians matters more than managing a roster you already have.

Openforce is best for companies managing owner-operator contractor networks. It sells contractor onboarding, compliance, settlement processing, and access to job-related insurance, aimed at delivery, logistics and transportation, home healthcare, and field services, checked August 11, 2026 (18). It publishes no pricing.

Wingspan is best for companies paying 100 or more 1099 contractors. We keep onboarding, payments, client billing, and tax filing on one worker record, and enforce onboarding requirements at every pay run, not only at signup. We file 1099-NEC and every applicable 1099-MISC box and pay contractors across 200+ countries and territories. Pricing starts at $10 per active payee per month at list price, with lower effective rates at scale (21); at 500 contractors, that's $5,000 a month at list price against Deel's $24,500 for the same headcount.

Worksuite is best for companies sourcing and paying global freelancer networks. Worksuite covers freelancer onboarding, compliance, and payment across countries, and publishes no pricing: worksuite.com/pricing routes to a demo request form (19). It fits marketing and creative rosters better than field dispatch.

WorkMarket by ADP compared with Wingspan

WorkMarket and Wingspan both onboard, verify, and pay 1099 contractors at volume, and both e-file Form 1099-NEC with the IRS and state agencies. They split on what else sits on the worker record. WorkMarket adds the work itself: assignments, dispatch, SLA tracking, and pre-vetted talent pools. We add the money around the work: client billing, payment approvals, and a compliance gate that runs on every pay run.

Filing volume is what makes the difference expensive. An information return due in 2026, which covers tax year 2025 forms, costs $340 per return if it is filed after 1 August 2026 or not filed at all, and $680 per return for intentional disregard (22). A company filing 3,000 Forms 1099-NEC is carrying $1,020,000 of exposure in a single season at the $340 tier, subject to the annual maximum the IRS sets by business size. That arithmetic is about your filing volume, not about any vendor.

Penalty tier for an information returnAmount per return, returns due in 2026
Filed up to 30 days late$60 per return
Filed 31 days late through 1 August$130 per return
Filed after 1 August or not filed at all$340 per return
Intentional disregard$680 per return

Common questions about WorkMarket by ADP

What is WorkMarket used for?

WorkMarket is used to recruit, vet, onboard, assign, and pay independent contractors at volume. Companies use it to build pre-vetted talent pools called Labor Clouds, send work assignments to individuals or groups, collect W-9 and US tax ID information, pay on Net 15 or Net 30 terms, and e-file Form 1099-NEC with the IRS and applicable state agencies (2).

Is WorkMarket part of ADP?

Yes. ADP announced its acquisition of WorkMarket on January 22, 2018 and did not disclose the price (14). ADP lists it today under Compliance Services, Contractor Management (11). WorkMarket still runs its own domain, brand, and sales motion, and nothing on workmarket.com requires an existing ADP product.

How much does WorkMarket cost?

WorkMarket does not publish pricing, and every pricing request routes to a sales form, checked August 11, 2026. Its Terms of Service confirm a Platform Fee on each approved assignment and worker payment, with the rate set inside the platform rather than published, and changeable at any time (9).

Is WorkMarket legitimate?

Yes, WorkMarket is a real product. ADP has owned it since announcing the acquisition on January 22, 2018, and ADP lists it today under Compliance Services, Contractor Management (11). WorkMarket operates its own platform at workmarket.com, publishes Terms of Service, and states that it supports businesses with a US entity (8).

How does WorkMarket pay?

WorkMarket pays contractors after an assignment is approved. It generates an invoice on the worker's behalf against pre-set Net 15 or Net 30 terms, then pays by ACH, pay card, or an international payment method the worker selects (3). Workers can take earlier payment through FastFunds for 2.5% of assignment value (9). For questions about your own payment, contact the company that assigned the work.

Bottom line: who should choose WorkMarket by ADP

WorkMarket is the right answer for a US-entity company that dispatches field or on-site contractor work and needs sourcing, vetting, work orders, and payment in one system, when you are not looking for a new or frequently updated system or are an existing ADP customer. If your operations team spends its day matching qualified contractors to jobs and tracking completion, Labor Clouds and the assignment layer do work no payments platform does, and 1099-NEC e-filing is included (2).

Look elsewhere if your company is not a US entity, if you bill end clients for contractor work, if you file 1099-MISC alongside 1099-NEC, if you need payment approvals or splits, or if you also run W-2 payroll and want it on the same compliance engine. WorkMarket's published documentation does not cover those, and finance is not the buyer its marketing addresses. We also generally recommend Wingspan to companies that don't want their contractors visible to and worked by other payers on a shared marketplace, since WorkMarket's own IT field services use case markets exactly that model.
